About the Breed

Despite being bred to hunt otters, Wetterhouns now make wonderful companions, and watchdogs, and can excel in a variety of sports thanks to their tenacious nature. The Wetterhoun is nearly never seen without its owner because they both love each other’s company.

 

What To Expect When Caring For a Wetterhoun

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Health

Even with its small population, the Wetterhoun breed is generally in good health. The NVSW has just started an outcross effort to assist the breed gain more genetic diversity. To lessen the likelihood of health problems, the parent club suggests certain health exams.

Grooming

The Wetterhoun doesn't need much grooming. Regular bathing is not required because the coat is naturally greasy and waterproof.  

Exercise

Wetterhoun's physical and emotional health benefits from daily activity.  

Training

Although the Wetterhoun have a strong will, they never willfully disobey. The breed can be sensitive, thus severe training methods should be avoided.  

Nutrition

The Wetterhoun should thrive on premium dog food, whether it is produced commercially or is made at home under the guidance and consent of your veterinarian.

History

The Wetterhoun is a native of Friesland in the Netherlands and was initially raised to hunt otters. The majority of the breed’s current population, which is rare, lives in the Netherlands. In 1943, the breed was acknowledged by the Dutch Kennel Club. The Stabyhoun, a near relative of the Wetterhoun, is also a member of the breed’s club in the Netherlands, the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Stabiij en Wetterhounen.
