The Segugio Italiano is a persistent hunter with exceptional stamina. He is quick on his feet and elegant. Its willing disposition, intellect, kind and submissive demeanor, and adaptability make it an excellent companion for individuals of all ages. As an eager pet, it strives hard to meet the wants of its owner. Such personality, combined with persistent loyalty, has become it Italy’s sweetheart. The Segugio Italiano is a well-mannered and diligent watchdog who keeps an eye on both the property and the owner. It is neither aggressive nor shy, but rather courageous and careful. The Segugio Italiano is a reserved breed.

 

It can adapt to any living condition if it receives adequate mental and physical exercise. The dog is available in two coat types: Pelo Raso (short hair) and Pelo Forte (wire hair). Within those coat varieties, the Segit is either fawn or black & tan with very little white showing on the coat. Both coat types shed, but only a little.

 

 

What To Expect When Caring For a Segugio Italiano

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Health

At this time the Segugio Italiano has no known health defects.

Grooming

Given the Segugio Italiano's two coat types, weekly brushing is sufficient. Because of its long ears, the ears should be cleaned, kept dry, and flipped over on a regular basis to let air into the canals to avoid ear infections. Nail trimming should be done as needed. Plague buildup on teeth should be checked on a regular basis. Along with regular brushing, specific toys and rewards can help avoid dental disorders.

Exercise

A daily 30-45 minute walk and 1-2 hours of free-roaming will keep your Segugio Italiano healthy, happy, and fit. For apartment residents, the dog will require frequent visits to the dog park. Two or three main outings per week will be adequate for active households, with fewer activities during the rest of the week. Playing games and training for dog sports such as agility, obedience, and rally can also be a fun way to exercise your dog.

Training

The Segugio Italiano requires steady and sturdy handling. He is eager to please and quick to learn. Outside of a gated area, they should be kept on a leash, as with other hounds. Early socialization might help you avoid having a shy or timid hound.

Nutrition

To achieve peak performance, the Segugio Italiano should be fed a high-protein, low-fat diet designed exclusively for performance dogs. Consult your veterinarian for the best food for your dog's activity level if he or she is less active. At all times, fresh, clean water should be available.

History

The Segugio Italiano is often referred to as the Segit (pronounced see get). It is an old breed that is said to have descended from Egyptian hounds that made their way to the several city-states that make up modern-day Italy. Similar dogs have been shown in statues of “Diana Cacciatrice” and “Diana Scoccante L’arco” situated in the Museum of Naples and the Vatican Museum, respectively, as a scenthound originally used for wild boar dating back to Italy’s pre-Roman era. Remains of dogs similar to these hounds have been unearthed in the province of Verona, and a painting from 1600 in the Borso d’Este castle depicts a hound similar to the Italian hound. Though their exact origins are unknown, these artifacts attest to the hound’s long and extensive history in the region.

The Segit, like many other hunting dogs, witnessed a reduction in popularity after the decline of wild boar in the Italian countryside; several canine breeds risked extinction. This native son of Italy is currently one of the most popular dogs in its birthplace, thanks to the work of committed houndsmen and the breed’s tenacity. Segits are most commonly seen today hunting rabbits and other small animals. This strong, medium-sized hound, who rarely tracks unwanted games, can be run alone or in packs. It has been employed not just to track, but also to kill, its prey. This dog, known for its powerful nose and “steel legs,” can operate in any terrain for hours on end with speed and accuracy.
