About the Breed

The Smooth Fox Terrier, sometimes known as the ‘gentleman of the terrier world,’ is a lively, social terrier with a devil-may-care attitude that was bred for Britain’s traditional foxhunts. They are related to each other terriers of the Wire Fox.

Smooths resemble their close relatives, Wire Fox Terriers. Smooths, like their crispy-coated brethren, stand no taller than 15.5 inches at the shoulder. Aside from coat type, the most significant physical feature is the head: a Smooth’s head is more V-shaped than a Wire’s. The coat is dense and flat, with black, tan, or black-and-tan patterns. These hunters are robust and durable, but never coarse or bulky. They move with the steadfast grace of a pendulum clock, being short-backed and symmetrical.

What To Expect When Caring For a Smooth Fox Terrier

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Health

Smooth Fox Terriers are typically healthy dogs, and prudent breeders screen their breeding stock for health issues such as patellar luxation and heart disease. Brushing the teeth on a regular basis with dog toothpaste is recommended. Regular vet visits for examinations and parasite control assist to ensure the dog has a long and healthy life.

Grooming

Grooming the Smooth Fox Terrier's short but rough, dense coat once a week with a thick brush or hound glove is recommended. A bath every month or so should suffice unless the dog follows his instincts and digs a hole in the muck, in which case "bathe as needed" is the rule. Nails should be neatly trimmed. Ears should be checked weekly for extra wax and debris that might cause ear infections, and teeth should be brushed as frequently as possible.

Exercise

The Smooth Fox Terrier, like most terriers, is active and needs plenty of exercise. Long walks with his owner, chasing a tennis ball in the backyard, or playtime in a wide, securely fenced area are all excellent methods to exercise and emotionally and physically fit your dog. Allowing your Smooth Fox Terrier to run off-leash is dangerous because he is likely to flee if he sees a small animal that he misidentifies as prey.  

Training

Smooth Fox Terriers are courageous yet not hostile toward humans. In the home, they make excellent watchdogs. New owners should be advised that the breed's intrinsic desire to dig may cause problems in the family yard or flowerbeds unless the dog is trained otherwise. Smooths are ideal watchdogs because they are alert and "on the edge of expectations." They are energetic, cheerful, and amusing. They are equally at home in the city as in the country and should be kept in a gated yard or on a leash, as they can go off to follow any adventure. Some can develop jealousy or aggression against other dogs, cats, or small pets as they mature. Puppy sessions with an experienced terrier trainer are highly recommended.  

Nutrition

Smooth Fox Terriers are brave yet not aggressive toward humans. They make wonderful watchdogs in the home. New owners should be warned that the breed's natural desire to dig may cause problems in the family yard or flowerbeds unless the dog is properly taught. Smooths are excellent watchdogs because they are attentive and "on the edge of expectations." They are also lively, happy, and funny. They are equally at home in the city as they are in the country and should be kept in a gated yard or on a leash as they are prone to running out to pursue any adventure. As they age, certain dogs, cats, or small pets may develop jealousy or hostility toward other dogs, cats, or small pets. Sessions with an expert terrier trainer are highly advised for puppies.  

History

Foxhunting in its old form is currently prohibited in England, yet it was a pastime of the British gentry for years. A full-dress foxhunt, complete with spectacle and ceremony, was a sight to behold: dozens of hunters and horses, massive packs of hounds, and tenacious fox terriers, all thundering across the vast, rolling estates of the very affluent. When the fox went underground, the terriers rode in saddlebags and were liberated. The horses and hounds would resume the hunt when the terriers had routed the fox.
