History
The German Bracken were the first hunting dogs, with “the finest nose” and a strong desire to follow scents and trails, but only the most dependable and perseverant Bracken was put on a leash to find the lost trail of hunted animals. All Liam Hounds (Leithunde) and Leashhounds (Schweisshunde), including the Bayerischer Gebirgsschweisshund (Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound), were bred from these Bracken.
The Hanoverian Scenthound had emerged by the end of the Eighteenth Century and the beginning of the Nineteenth, and it was the breed of choice for hunters in lower elevations. Following the 1848 Revolution and advances in hunting and weapons, a dog was required for “after the shot” to track down the injured game in the more hilly regions. The big Hanoverian Scenthound was not up to the job. In the 1870s, to meet the demand for a lighter, more agile hound, Baron Karg-Bebenburg, Reichenhall, mixed a Hanoverian Scenthound with a red Mountain Scenthound to create the Bavarian Mountain Scenthound. The Club for Bavarian Mountain Scenthounds was founded in Munich, Germany in 1912, and it is the only recognized club for the breed in that country.
