About the Breed

The Jagdterrier, also known as the Deutscher Jagdterrier, is a courageous, resilient, vital, full-tempered, dependable, friendly, and trainable dog breed. He constantly enjoys doing his work. Germany produces the adaptable hunting dog known as the Jagdterrier. He is particularly well adapted to hunting beneath the earth and as a flushing dog and is very small, compact, and well-proportioned. In German, his name literally translates as “hunt terrier.” His thick, hard-and-rough or smooth-and-course coat is often black and tan, although it can also be dark brown or grayish-black. His eyebrows, muzzle, chest, legs, and tail base all have tan patterns. Additionally, he can have very minor white markings on his toes and chest.

 

 

 

 

 

 

What To Expect When Caring For a Jagdterrier

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Health

Most Jagdterrier dogs are in good health. Those who want to own a Jagdterrier can learn everything they need to know about the breed's particular health issues by working with a responsible breeder. To lessen the possibility of sickness in their puppies, good breeders genetically screen their breeding material.    

Grooming

In addition to weekly grooming, giving your Jagdterrier a bath every now and then will keep him clean and looking his best. For you and your dog, grooming can be a great way to strengthen your relationship. With a nail clipper or grinder, the strong, quickly developing nails should be frequently cut to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and breaking. Regular ear examinations are necessary to prevent wax and debris buildup, which can lead to infection. You should brush your teeth frequently.    

Exercise

Playtime in the backyard, preferably gated, or being taken for walks multiple times a day are two options for exercise. Exercise can also be obtained through indoor games like hide-and-seek, chasing a ball that has been rolled across the floor, or practicing new moves. A smart way to burn off energy outside is to engage in sports like swimming, hiking, or retrieving balls or flying discs. Even quick walks through the halls in your apartment can provide your dog with exercise, especially when it's bad outside. Getting your dog ready for canine sports like agility, obedience, and rallying can be a terrific way to get him or her moving.

The Jagdterrier should thrive on premium dog food, whether it is made commercially or at home under the guidance and consent of your veterinarian. Whatever the dog's age (puppy, adult, or senior), the diet should be suitable. Watch your dog's calorie intake and weight level because certain dogs are prone to obesity. Treats can be a valuable training tool, but offering them in excess might lead to obesity. Discover which foods fit the bill for canine consumption and which don't. If you have any worries about your dog's weight or diet, consult your veterinarian. Fresh water that is clean should always be accessible.      

History

A tiny number of avid hunters split out from the much bigger Fox-Terrier Club following World War I. This group wanted to develop a breed that was exclusively focused on hunting ability. Rudolf Frie, Walter Zangenberg, and Carl-Erich Grunewald, three seasoned hunters and cynologists, made the decision to choose a black and tan hunting hound that was especially well-suited to hunting underground. They were helped by a coincidence when Walter Zangenberg received four black and tan terriers from Lutz Heck, the director of the zoo, who claimed they were purebred Fox terriers. These canines later served as the Jagdterrier breed’s original stock.

Dr. Herbert Lackner joined the founders at this point. They were able to stabilize the appearance of their breed after many years of intensive breeding efforts and by deft crossings with the Welsh Terrier and Old English Wirehaired Terrier. They also place a lot of focus on breeding a dog with a clear hunting sense that is multi-talented, trainable, hard-working, water-loving, and tongue-giving. In 1926, the German Hunting Terrier Club (German Jagdterrier-Club e.V.) was established. Breeders continue to place the most priority on their breed’s effectiveness as a hunting dog, stability of character, courage, and drive.
