The Karelian Bear Dog is an active hunter who is self-sufficient but works together to designate a game by barking. Their senses, particularly their sense of smell, are acute, making the breed suitable for big game hunting. They have a strong sense of direction and are well-balanced, brave, and persistent. This breed has a strong hunting instinct and is very self-assured. They may be possessive towards other males, but they are never hostile towards people, despite their guarded demeanor.
The Karelian Bear Dog is a medium-sized spitz with a dense coat, although his standards are closer to those of non-spitz dogs like the Samoyed and Siberian Husky. His build reflects his training to hunt huge, hostile wildlife on his own.
He is a silent hunter, only barking after the animal has been halted or treed. He transmits the type of animal he has located to an expert hunter by the sound of his bark. Though he can be controlled around people, his fighting nature comes out with other dogs and can be tough to manage. Karelian Bear Dogs enjoy a good challenge, therefore his spirit can easily turn to hostility.
