The Tornjak has a calm demeanor, is affable, brave, submissive, clever, and exudes dignity and self-assurance. He is fierce in protecting the property that has been given to him, cannot be bought off, and is wary of strangers. He is devoted to his master, serene while he is around, and loving to those who are in his immediate area.
The Croatian Shepherd dog of Bosnia and Herzegovina is another name for the Tornjak. He is a big, strong dog with good proportions and agility. His body is virtually square in shape. When he is standing and moving, he is powerful, symmetrical, and balanced. He has a thick, lengthy coat. Studies indicate that the Tornjak is either a Tibetan Mastiff ancestor or a native of the region that is now Iran. With very modest needs for food and shelter, this environment has produced a watchdog that is strong and healthy. Tornjaks are amiable with people but hostile to dogs and other animals that pose a threat to their owner’s property, including their homes, sheep, pens, and flocks. They enjoy working and are obedient to their masters’ directions.
