Corgi Husky Mix – A Very Cute Dog Mix

The Corgi Husky mix is a new designer pooch on the block, but it has already captured the hearts of many dog lovers. Developed by crossing a purebred Siberian Husky and a purebred Corgi, the Horgi is the perfect mix of both worlds.

What type of dog is Corgi Husky Mix? Labeled as one of the designer breeds, the Corgi Husky mix is a crossbreed and as such not recognized by AKC. Small to medium in size, the Horgi is an ideal family dog with lots of energy and lively nature. Apartment-friendly, outgoing and smart, they get along with everyone they meet.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg! Stay with us till the end of this article to find out everything you need to know before you bring a Horgi home.

What is a Corgi Husky Mix?

The Corgi Husky mix, also known as Horgi or Siborgi, is a fairly new designer dog. Although created by crossing a purebred Siberian Husky with a purebred Corgi, the Horgi is a mixed-breed dog.

Being a hybrid dog breed, the Corgi Husky mix isn’t recognized by any major kennel club and can’t compete in dog shows. However, these outgoing and loving dogs are great companions to people of all ages and families with older children.

Brief History

The breed’s origins are still a bit of mystery, but it’s possible that this mix existed naturally for some time. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the breeders intentionally started to cross Huskies with Corgis.

The idea behind these efforts was to create a smaller herding dog who will possess the best traits of both the parent breeds.

Corgi

Before we go any further, you should know that there are two types of Corgis – the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. As one of the oldest breeds in Britain, both are easily recognizable for their stocky build, short legs, and fox-like face.

Originally bred as herding dogs, Corgis have an outgoing, exuberant, and loving nature and make great family pets.

Husky

Bred to be a working dog, the Siberian Husky was originally used to pull sleds in extreme weather conditions. Known for its thick and lush coat and piercing blue eyes, the Husky is an intelligent and outgoing dog with a stubborn streak.

While extremely loyal and devoted to their owners, Huskies can be a handful due to their mischievous nature and tendency to wander off.

Corgi Husky Mix

When you mix the two, you get a Horgi – a highly energetic small to medium-sized dog with a strong work ethic and herding instincts.

Horgis are intelligent, friendly, attention-seeking dogs who like to be a part of the family and will make you laugh with their silly antics. However, their stubborn and unruly nature can be too much, especially if you are used to docile and calm lap-dogs.

Characteristics of Horgi – Corgi Husky

Characteristics of Horgi

It’s impossible to predict how any mixed-breed dog will turn out to be, and the Horgi is not an exception. Generally speaking, you should expect your Horgi to have a stocky body, short legs, and long back.

Corgi Husky Mix Highlights:

SizeSmall to medium-sized dog
Weight20-50 pounds
Height12-15 inches
Coat TypeMedium long, thick, double coat
SheddingSeasonal shedding
Energy LevelHighly energetic
Overall HealthVery good
Lifespan12-15 years

Height

Depending on which parent breed it takes more after, the Horgi is a small to medium-sized dog. Generally, they are 12 to 15 inches tall, but there is a chance that your pooch ends up being shorter or taller.

Weight

Since the Horgi is a fairly new cross-breed there are no set standards when it comes to weight and size. A full-grown Horgi can weigh from 20 to 50 pounds, but you shouldn’t be alarmed if your mix weighs more or less.

Coat Color

While it’s hard to predict how any individual Horgi is going to look like when he grows up, one thing is for sure – your new pooch will have a thick double coat. On the other hand, the coat’s color will depend on the coat colors of the Siberian Husky parent and the Corgi parent.

Most commonly seen coat colors are:

  • Black
  • Cream
  • Fawn
  • Red
  • Sable
  • White

When it comes to patterns the most common ones are solid and tri-colored.

Shedding

Just like their parents, Horgis have thick double coats that shed all year round and go through a heavy shed during the shedding season (source). If you aren’t keen on seeing dog hair all around your home and clothes, this mix isn’t the right choice for you.

On the other hand, if you like to clean and vacuum you’re in for a treat since your Horgi will produce a steady amount of loose hair year-round!

Temperament

Being a crossbreed, it’s hard to predict the exact temperament of any individual Horgi. However, you can get a better idea of how your new pooch is going to behave by meeting both of his parents and gouging their temperaments.

In terms of temperament you should expect an overly friendly dog that likes to meet new people and be the center of everyone’s attention. Since they are naturally outgoing and trusting, Horgis aren’t good guard dogs and will likely meet intruders with a wagging tail and a smiling face.

As a descendant of working breeds, Horgis are highly energetic and best suited for active people who like to be out and about. With that being said, your mix will be more interested in hikes and jogging than being a lap dog.

While highly alert, the eager-to-please Horgi isn’t territorial nor aggressive and gets along nicely with other pets. And with its curious and loving nature, this mix is a perfect family dog for active people.

Corgi Husky Care

Corgi Husky Care

It’s your responsibility as an owner to start caring for your Horgi as soon as you bring him home. Take a look at things you should pay attention to:

Health Risks

Mixed-breed dogs are generally more resilient than their purebred parents. However, you should be aware of any potential issues your Horgi can inherit.

The most commonly seen health problems in this breed are:

  • Skin problems
  • Eye problems
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Patent ductus arteriosus

While this may seem a lot, Horgis are considered a generally healthy breed and have an average lifespan of 12-15 years.

Grooming

As already stated, Horgis have a thick double coat that sheds year-round. Hence, you will have to brush your dog every day to keep his coat healthy and shiny and to remove all loose hair.

When it comes to bathing, you should do it only when your pooch gets dirty and smelly (source). However, their water-resistant double coat can be hard to lather up during bathing and it takes a while to completely dry.

And even if you feel tempted, don’t ever clip your Horgi’s coat! There is a big chance that the coat will grow back incorrectly and will no longer keep your pooch properly insulated during the winter and summer.

Food and Diet

An ideal diet for your Horgi is the one formulated for small to medium-sized dogs with high energy. Keep in mind that this hybrid tends to pack on the pounds easily so you should avoid free feeding and set up a regular feeding schedule (source).

Try to feed your dog with the highest quality food you can afford, and avoid brands that use cheap fillers such as wheat, corn, and soy. And when in doubt, talk with your vet or a canine nutritionist who can create an individual feeding plan for your pooch.

Training and Exercise

The highly energetic and active Horgi needs up to 60 minutes of daily exercise. Depending on your lifestyle you can either take your dog on longer walks or pair shorter walks with jogging sessions.

Don’t forget to take some extra time to play with your pooch every day. Games like fetch, tug-of-war, and agility courses will keep your Horgi in great shape and prevent boredom.

You should know that training a Horgi can be a challenge, especially if you haven’t owned dogs before. While they are intelligent and can pick on things easily, Horgis tend to be strong-willed and can be free thinkers.

When it comes to training, positive reinforcement and consistency usually give the best results (source). And no matter how frustrated you feel, harsh corrections will just make things worse, so stay positive and don’t give up!

Housing

Due to its small size and friendly nature, the Horgi is suited for indoor living and will be a happy camper in a tiny apartment or a big house.

You don’t necessarily need a big backyard if you plan to walk your pooch on a daily basis. But your Horgi won’t object to have a yard where he can run, play, and explore.

Where to Get Corgi Husky Mix Breed?

Considering that this is a recently developed hybrid, Corgi Husky mix puppies might be a bit harder to find. Ultimately, there are only two things you can do – adopt or shop.

Corgi Husky Mix Breeders

If you want to buy your pooch, make sure to research all Corgi Husky mix breeders to find reputable ones. A good breeder will show you around and let you meet the puppies and the parents, and if not you should look for another breeder.

Corgi Husky Mix Price

Depending on a breeder, the Corgi Husky mix can cost from $300 to $1000. However, the price can be higher if either one or both the Husky and the Corgi parent have won shows and have distinctive pedigrees.

Adoption

If you are genuinely interested in bringing a Horgi home, you should seriously consider adopting one. And while you might not find a Corgi Husky mix right away, you should check out local shelters and rescue organizations.

You might want to try Corgi and Siberian Husky breed-specific rescue groups since they generally keep mixed-breed dogs such as Horgis.
